Nepal has selected the Tibetan-language film “Shambhala” as its official entry for the 97th Academy Awards. Directed by Nepali filmmaker Min Bahadur Bham, the film is a groundbreaking achievement for both Tibetan and Nepali cinema, showcasing a predominantly Tibetan cast on the global stage.

“Shambhala” first caught international attention at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, where it had its world premiere on February 23 at the Berlinale Palast. The film continued its successful festival run, winning the Best Cinematography award at the 2024 Bishkek International Film Festival in Kyrgyzstan. Lead actor Thinley Lhamo, a Tibetan refugee, was awarded the prestigious Boccalino d’Oro Prize for Best Acting Performance at the 77th Locarno Film Festival.

Set in the remote Dolpo region of Nepal, the film is shot entirely in the Tibetan language. It tells the story of Pema, portrayed by Thinley Lhamo, a pregnant woman in a polyandrous marriage with Tashi and his two younger brothers. When Tashi goes missing during a trading journey, questions about Pema’s unborn child arise, leading her on a transformative search for him. This journey evolves into a profound spiritual quest for self-liberation and personal discovery, beyond the immediate need to reunite with her husband.

In a statement, the film’s team expressed excitement over the Oscar selection: “We are thrilled to announce that ‘Shambhala’, a beautifully crafted film directed by Min Bahadur Bham, has been selected for the 97th Academy Awards. The film, set in Northern Nepal, is a powerful portrayal of female self-determination and empowerment.”

“Shambhala” is currently being screened in nine theaters within the Kathmandu Valley and 39 locations throughout Nepal, gaining widespread attention for its rich storytelling and cultural significance.
