Recent research by hospitality operator Bob W indicates that the sector’s carbon emissions are significantly higher than previously estimated. Their innovative measurement tool, the Lodging Emissions & Guest-night Impact Tracker (LEGIT), suggests emissions are at least five times greater than current estimates derived from existing frameworks like the Hotel Carbon Measurement Initiative (HCMI).
Comprehensive Measurement with LEGIT
Developed in collaboration with consultancy Furthr, LEGIT offers a more holistic approach to measuring environmental impact. Unlike HCMI, which focuses on direct factors such as electricity, gas, refrigerant gases, and laundry services, LEGIT encompasses additional elements. These include the environmental impact of construction materials, cleaning services, toiletries, food and beverage consumables, waste, water, and furnishings.
Significant Findings
Applying LEGIT to their properties, Bob W discovered that the average carbon footprint was 419% higher than HCMI estimates—a fivefold increase. This discrepancy is primarily due to the inclusion of indirect emissions from suppliers, which are often overlooked in traditional assessments.
Implications for the Hospitality Sector
These findings suggest that many hospitality operators may not be fully addressing the scope of their environmental impact, particularly concerning indirect emissions. Bob W emphasizes the need for the industry to adopt more comprehensive standards, accurately measure emissions, and share data transparently. By doing so, guests can make informed, sustainable choices regarding their accommodations.
Bob W’s Commitment to Sustainability
Known for its dedication to sustainable practices, Bob W became the first international climate-neutral hospitality provider in 2021 and aims to achieve net-zero status by 2050. The company offsets 100% of its operational emissions and prioritizes renewable energy sources. Their latest Sustainability Report reveals a total carbon footprint of 4,489 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) for 2023, marking a 90% increase from 2022.
By introducing the LEGIT tool, Bob W sets a new standard for environmental accountability in the hospitality industry, encouraging others to follow suit in providing transparent and comprehensive emissions data.
